Excerpt:
It was very late when the lovers went to their rooms. David had promised himself, that if Marlene behaved strangely again, he would stop, even if he had to tie Moby down with weights. It had been too long since he had made love to the real Marlene. She had been warm and lovingly responsive, and he knew there was nothing better on earth than what had happened between them. It was the way it was meant to be, he thought. You could have all the erotic sex in the world, but if you didn't have love, you were but an empty shell of a man.
Then just before sleep claimed him, he remembered what he had done to Tory. His eyes flew open. The great psychologist, he thought, punching out his brother. I'm a real shit.
The next morning, when Tory did not show up for breakfast, Mary had an uncomfortable premonition. Tory was always up before any of the others;he was a morning person. When she went to his room to check on him, she was shocked to find him hot and feverish, his face pale beneath an ugly bruise.

Synopsis
The setting is Canso, Nova Scotia; the year is 1879. The beautiful Angela McAllister has a plan;she will nurse her husband Raymond until his death even though she has given herself body and soul to her lover, Duncan Nair. She will wear the mourning jewellery--the Whitby jet she so admires--for two full years. Then she and Duncan will marry and dwell in the home she loves--the home Raymond built for her.
But Raymond has reason to suspect her. Paralysed, helpless and overcome with uncertainty, his mind deteriorates. The carvings above his bed take on a sinister meaning until finally convinced of her betrayal, he makes a pact with the forces of evil. So long as Angela wears the jet, her passion will mock her--and he will be sincerely mourned.
It is now 1982, in St. Lambert, Quebec. Melanie Nair, the sole Nair descendant and living image of her great-grandmother, inherits the Victorian home that once belonged to Angela so long ago. She sets off for Nova Scotia with her boyfriend David to claim her inheritance.
Once Melanie discovers the jet she is strangely drawn to it and her personality changes dramatically. The spirit of her ancestor Duncan Nair comes to her aid, but his love is not enough. The spiritually far-sighted Tory is the only one who senses that the jet is the medium of evil. He warns her but to no avail. When Melanie is compelled to return to Canso, David follows her. He battles for the woman he loves to the very end. But can the power of unconditional love conquer the forces of evil?
