A Matter of the Heart

Excerpt:
"This is Canada, not Holland. Maartje will understand and be proud of me. After all, it's my first new coat in 15 years." He would explain to her about the few dollars a month over his whole lifetime. But his hand trembled when he wrote out the cheque.
The clerk smiled as he looked on, then said quickly, "How about a hat, sir?"
He held up an elegant hat with a few feathers in its ribbon and went on enthused, "Exquisite, sir. How about these leather gloves to complete your new outfit?"
Klaas shoved the hat and gloves rudely aside. He sounded harsh, "No! I have plenty of hats and gloves!"
Subdued by this lie he thought of Maartje's hand-knitted hat and gloves. No, his old Sunday hat would have to do at least for the time being. But looking in the mirror he could barely contain his joy that he wore a coat like the Baron's and that he was almost as handsome.
